Drain cleaning is an essential part of the job of Plumbers. In fact, aside from leaky faucets and toilets, it is probably one of the most common things they get service calls for. With the experience plumbing contractors have with cleaning out drains, they have a lot of tips they can offer the general population on how to keep the drain clear and unclogged.
Pour Brine Solution in Drain
Brine solution is made up of a strong salt and water combination. This can be poured down the drain to prevent grease buildup or to loosen any grease already in the drain. Another tip is to follow the brine solution with boiling hot water.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
Baking soda and vinegar are both household ingredients that can be used for many things. They are also much less harsh than store bought drain cleaning solutions. Baking soda should be poured into the drain first followed by the vinegar. When combined together, they make a bubbling, volcano type effect that loosens the clog.
Store Bought Drain Cleaner
A store-bought drain cleaner such as Drano or Liquid Plumber can also help unclog a drain. As with any solution, the effectiveness will depend on why the drain is clogged in the first place. Things such as grease and hair can be unclogged with these types of solutions. If something is blocking the drain, such as an object, this may not be effective. It is also important to make sure to purchase the correct type of drain cleaner if you are on a septic system or it can cause more harm than good.
A plunger is one of the easiest and most effective ways to quickly unclog a drain. This does not have to be a specialized plunger but it should be a standard, drain plunger. The plunger should be able to fit flat over the sink to create a suctioning effect when pressed down. If a different kind of plunger is used, it will not work properly to unclog the drain.
A drain snake is like using a wire hanger. The purpose is to push whatever may be clogging the drain out manually by threading the snake through the pipe.
If these methods do not work, a plumber should be called. There could be a larger problem. The contractor can make sure it is cleared without repercussions or further expense.
